Damned if I do, Damned if I dont..lost my favorite koi

A few weeks (or months) ago..I had a showa shipped to me with a slightly red, damaged dorsal fin. I thought it was minor..so, did nothing. I showed the fish here weeks later when the fin was eaten away and the bone was sticking out. I said, I wished I had acted sooner and injected!! That fish recovered..but will never be shown (most likely).
So, My favorite Hosokai showa..my 2 time Kokugyu winner..has died today. I saw 2 weeks ago that it's dorsal fin was damaged (here is the picture..looking stressed from capture) I don't know how it happened..looked like trauma. Maybe it jumped..or an animal..or something. All my other fish are perfect. This was always a very aggressive koi..First up to eat..and real pushy about it!! I decided not to wait this time. Injected nuflor, cleaned with iodine..and back in the pond. Well, 2 days ago(about 12 days later)...the fish was glowing red. Looked like a cellulitis. I put it in a hospital tank..and injected baytril. I also put iodine on the wound one more time. It received shot #2 yesterday. Today, I went to give it shot #3...and there it was belly-up. I'm not sure what I could have done differently?? I don't treat..things went lousy. I decide to treat the next time..and things went worse!!! The thing that kills me is the fish was doing incredible. Went from 8.5 to 14 inches in 4-5months.
It's going to be tough to replace this one for me. Definitely going to miss Mr. Perfect. Any advice on what else I could have done is appreciated.

sorry for your loss

look for the obvious something in your pond that they run into to cause damage. One time I helped a friend discover that his big girls were getting injured from a demand feeder that they climbed up onto each other's back to get the food.

Sorry for your loss. BTW, what is the baytril dosage you use ?

For me, 20mg/KG every other day, 5 shots give the best result.

Sorry Brutuscz.

Beautiful fish. I really liked that one. Sometimes you just can't save them.

Bob . . .

So sorry. Know how much you loved that fish.

Now you've got some work to do.

1. You've got to figure out how they're getting injured. What's in the pond that can injure them?

2. You've got to figure out why little injuries aren't healing themselves like they should. This usually has to do with water quality and stress issues.

Any KHAs in your area?

Good luck,

so what was the dosage? the redness seems to be mild for consecutive days injections. for this situation, it seems like a shot every 3 days should be sufficient. I have not use baytril but for amakacin, I used about 15mg/kg per shot.

Sounds like a valiant attempt. However, it is possible that the bugs in question did not respond at all to the Nuflor--if it would have responded to the Baytril (which hits a fair number of the likely culprits) it might have been too late.

I ruined a nice showa once when it hit a net I put over the pond (to keep the fish from jumping out), snagged the lead ray, and snapped it back the wrong way.

Seems like its always something....

I used baytril at .5ml per shot. I gave 2 injections on 2 consecutive days. I went to give the third on day three...and that was all she wrote. I have really had a good season for my koi..health-wise. One jumped out..and one was shipped with a damaged dorsal fin. Other than that..no real problems. Water quality has been excellent...a little green, but the fish like it. I can only chaulk this one up to bad luck. My pond is black liner with no rocks...not sure how it could have happened. This fish is very aggressive when the food is there..so, maybe in mass feeding frenzy the fin got injured?!?! Not sure how else?? Thanks for all the well wishes though.

0.5 ml is not the dosage you can count on for any medicine. You need to know the concentration of the med, For example, if you baytril is 10%, you koi is 1 kg, @20mg/kg, you will need 20mg. 1ml @ 0.1 = 100mg of baytril, you will need 0.2 CC.

The recommended dosage of baytril for koi, from bayer, is 5mg/kg, which does nothing. They are 3 different concentration of baytril out in the market, 2.?%, 5% and 10%. That koi was 14", which is very likely less than 1kg. So, you either under-dosed or way overdosed.

I think you may have make the smae mistake on fuflor too.

Hope something is learned on the passing of that koi.

I know the dosages very well. I used a slightly higher dosage for sure. In an acute cellulitis, it was worth a shot. Sometimes, you need an elephant gun. I could have given some Dexamethasone as well, but didn't. I have used baytril at that level in the past with no Ill effects. I just think the fish was septic, and nothing was going to bring it back. I just wish the nuflor would have done the job initially...but no luck.
