I learned by accident yesterday that it is possible to obtain Shinkansen tickets printed in English now. It was only after the girl in the ticket office in Tokyo game them to me that I noted a sign saying that they could be requested. Just makes it a little bit easier to work out carriage, seat number, etc, etc.
