This started out to be a simple question and evolved into a pretty involved, interesting thread. I always like to get other's opinions on things. helps me to understand the total mix of mentalities in the koi keeping community. Plus over the years I've learned that it depends on what board you place the question on as to what kind of answer you get

I've never owned a long fin. I notice when non hobbyists come to a pond, they're usually the ones that get commented on first. I agree with Jim, that for serious students of nishigoi, the differences are too great.

But if I've learned anything about koi keepers over the decades it's that you should keep the koi you enjoy for after everything is said and done no other influences should distract you. You can however reserve your right to change your mind as your direction in the hobby changes.

well put, Dick.

On the issue of judging however, I'd like to play with a few photos and see if I can make the point? Stay tuned. JR

while Jim's getting his next lesson prepared

I wanted to share an experience I witnessed at the Seattle Koi Show this Fall. The eldest son from Daiinichi and Maruyama were judging and they went thru close to 200 koi in record time. very impressive! When it came to longfins they went back and forth and it took forever to make a call. I asked later why this event had taken so long and the comment was that they honestly did not understand them. So Jim the stage is set for what you have to share with us

I view longfins as just another beautiful creation that should be appreciated.
Accept longfins for what they are, and you wont have any problems. Look at longfins like longfins, not koi.
