Smile Anyone know what this is

A koi in my holding tank has developed these near the tail in a suprisingly short amount of time. Ive never had any problems with my koi before, ive been lucky. I have no idea what thay are. Good job I used my holding tank.

welcome to our site

Nice to have you posting here.....While it's always tough to get a good clear picture of what is going on with fish issues ( my eyes aren't what that used to be either) it seems that we're dealing with color loss. It appears your koi is koromo and just that the beni is disappearing. It could be because of water issues or could be genetic ( or any combination). It doesn't seem to appear to be a disease and I'd bet it's not anything Contagious.

Beni with fish can be negatively impacted with high PH, tho to be honest my gut reaction is it's genetic and may not be anything you can do about it but feel releived it wasn't something you caused or will be worrying that other pond fish might catch.

Hopefully we'll get some other input....but you have my best quess ( for what it's worth)

that info helps thanks

So we call what you have here in the U.S. Pacific Northwest as "northwest Crud"....comes with low water temperatures and disappears as it raises. Don't know of a treatment for it as it comes and goes with the water temp. Seems to be only suseptable to certain individuals and not contageous. Some forms seem to harden like shellac and not disappear as another type. Not much help but that's my best quess now with the updated info....
hopefull some other's will chime in.....I know salt has been used with limited sucess on the ype that can be removed with fingernail ( not shellac type)
I loved on your location, where you said you were at....I suppose to a lot of Americans it wouldn't mean anything...but if your ancesters were from the UK, that might make a difference or if your a teen of the 60's and one of your favorite groups had you ferrying across the Mersey

Hello scousemouse . . .

Can't really tell what's going on with your koi due to photo quality.

Try Google using these search terms: "carp pox" photo

And then let us know if that's what you see on your koi, OK?

Guessing koi pox. Brought on by the cold water. A virus in the fish. Can be spread to other fish with overcrowding. You can bring the fish in, warm up the water and if it is pox, they'll disappear. Bad news is cold water brings them back. I've seen people scrape them off but they come back.
