Looks like a typical koi analysis....
everyone agrees to disagree on which is best !!!

Especially when we dont know the sizes.
I have bought koi from pictures before.
I will never do it again without someone I know sending the pics.

Every one always asks the size of a Koi. This is something I just don't understand. The size of the Koi you are buying should have nothing to do with the price. It is the quality and the potential of the Koi that should be what determines the price. The growth potential of a Koi is usualyy determined by the genetics received from the parents.

Russ, I have to respectfully diagree!! The size is very important as is the age. The risk declines in a koi as the future shortens! And there is no guarantee on how an expensive koi will turn out. So tosai are the cheapest and yonsai are the most expensive. With the grades the pricing follows the same curve of pricing. JR

Also a Koi's size and how things "look" at a given size, and age at that size, is a huge key in determining the future potential of the Koi, or where its going. A lot to read in a Koi's size,... and the age at that size.

Aquitori's "B" Kohaku really is the only one in that group that approaches perfection, and has any power. There's no denying the importance of balance and symmetry in the overall power and beauty of a top rate Koi. In addition to this it seems to have the best frame or shape, the finest white, very even soft beni, and sharp clean separation. Also looks very youthful and promising.

Best Wishes,
Brady Brandwood

Brady and JR, I will tell you why I disagree with you. Toshio Sakai has shown me Koi that are 70cm at four that were 30cm at two, because he grew them until they were two in his concrete ponds. He says that there are koi he will grow more slowly, because of their quality, at first and then he will put them out in mud ponds to finish growing. He says that it doesn't matter if his koi are 25cm or 45cm at Nisai, they can still achieve their full potential for growth and that 25cm koi should ultimately achieve the same size as the 45cm koi. Maybe this is unique to Mr. Sakai, I don't know, but it is what I now beleive to be true.

Yep Russ, I know what you're saying. I'm speaking of someone looking at a Koi who doesn't have a history of that Koi. Sakai knows his own fish like nobody else does. He knows which parents the Koi are from he was talking to you about, the ponds they were raised in,... from birth, and so on. Not the same for hobbyists at all.

If I were to step up to a bowl of Sakai's Kohakus though, not having ever seen them before,... knowing the age and the size at that age would help me in evaluating what I'm looking at. A fish's size is a very important factor,... not just for price. How the beni looks, the shape of the body, the look of the white,... so many factors play on the size and the age at that size.

You know I have no problem with people disagreeing.

Best Wishes,
Brady Brandwood
