I think this one will be interesting to watch.. wish it were here so I could have the fun

I like the head pattern, hopefully the dorsal and tail stop red will become a clean break. Hard to tell through the photo if the red is weak in that area or not?

Not a lot of experience with goshiki development, only ever had one - and she became more of a showa goshiki in the end.

Kind Regards,
Terri

The Goshiki's interest me. I have no experience with them, but I hope to find a good one from Brett to learn with. I am working to soften my water before I bring one home.

Hi Dick,
this goshiki came out of Niigata...
Not sure if it will ever make it to a show.

Tom,
Whatever you pick? Please treasure them co'z every fish that you pick will always come out different. Picking 2 year old is not easy they are very unstable. Everyone is entitled to something whether good or bad?
don't come them out!

I think what's so interesting about goshiki is the tremendous variety of the color. Ranging to a very black koi with batik looking black to a light grey, kohaku influenced koi ( and sometimes things in between). I know you'll enjoy it's paaage and hope you share it's picture when it matures. I have a 3 step nisei goshiki that looks like kohaku with nary a black or grey piece showing.
talk about watching grass grow....

This is a VERY old variety. In the beginning, the name goshiki was a catch all term. Everything from asgai crosses to kawari crosses were called goshiki. And there were a mis-mash of goshiki sanke, goshiki showa and even doitsu goshiki kujaku. Then the selective breeding and varieties became more organized and goshiki really became defined. It was a kawari of the asagi and it is known then and today as Kuro Goshiki. This was probably the 'golden age' for goshiki. The kuro was refined so that the deep dark black/grey body included highlites of white, blue and purple. The red pattern is either fire engine red or lava orange.
But this was often as small fish. And never a long lasting fish in terms of color intensity.
So like old style show giving way for a time to very extreme kindai showa, Kuro goshiki gave way to Shiro Goshiki as modern gosanke genes were poured into the mix.
In truth, today, ai gorormo and shiro goshiki come out of the same spawns. So genetically, the kuro has been washed away like some old time lines of showa.
The art is to keep the atmosphere and separateness of the goshiki of old while taking on the 'blessings' of modern gosanke. Until then, there are only a few individuals that are the best of both worlds. The rest are an aray or gradation of degrees of mixes between two distinct families - the kuro from asgai/karasu and the shiro from Kuro X gosanke.
When it's right, it's right. JR

Your right JR...
Old style Goshiki.
The dealer I bought this from is the only dealer I have seen with a batch of 1yr olds this October season.
They brought in 1100 pieces.

Not able to say who(they dont advertise on this site yet)
