Agreed but size 3-5 are more of a middle ground where a male koi could pull off the correct conformation.

I was looking for input as to which would be able to be more maintainable and attainable if you wanted to compete in these sizes. I had kept mixed pond before, and after the spawning incedents this last year never again. I have a few that are still growing scales back. So while I have consigned myself to females. I beleive that this is the size range most serious koi keepers could compete given and average set of means. So I if a keeper was going to keep only one sex and want to compete in this size range which would be suggested. While keeping in mind that if the keepers was spending 3 and 4 digits on a koi they would want to keep them for a few years.

Sounds like you need another pond for the males

For what you are describing, 6k G pond, males would be better but quality females are not out of the question if you were to give them 1000g/ female.

Now, if you had a larger & deeper pond, say 10,000g or more I would definitely say female & the water to koi ratio will still be the same.
