Great addition to this thread-it's interesting to see exactly what the different types look like. Seems to me there are also "stripes" of gin(similiar to diamond) on each scale of certain fish. What's that called? An aside:it used to be that fish often had fading gin with age but how is that now? Seems my two gin Ochibas and Showa are holding at 4 and 6 years old.

Hi Dan,

Here are a pics of Diamond, Pearl, and Beta. Hope this helps some people to distinguish what they look like when seen from a real fish. Sorry I don't have a picture to show for Kado Gin.

Gin Rin can detract/distract from the rest of a particular koi's beauty or it can enhance a koi. Sadly more times than not Gin Rin is a distraction.(IMO)

When entering a GR koi into a show class when you have the option you should take a step back and ask yourself is the GR the best feature of your koi. If the answer is yes then it should be entered in GR class if possible. If the answer is no the best attributes are deep quality color or beautiful classic pattern for the variety then it should be entered in the regular scaled class if allowed.

GR usualy looks best and can be an enhancement on simple lighter colored non-metallic koi. Koi like Kohaku Tanchos, Chagoi, or even some simple kohakus seem to look best. Some of the worst GR koi I have seen are varities like GR kujakus where there is just too many things distracting your eye and conflicting with each other. The combination of an metallic patterned koi with matsuba edging on its scales and GR to boot is sort of like putting ear rings on a pig. Neither enhance the other and leaves you wondering why anyone bothered. (IMO)

Those are really good illustrations of Gin, dang you can take great pics and draw also.

Woulda thunk?

Once again, my complete newness to the hobby is exposed! Thank you so much for the pictures of the different 'rins'. I had no idea there were so many kinds....geeze, something else to look for now! Actually, I am going to take another look at my Sakai sanke - always had noticed a glowing type shine to her scales at the right angles - that may be something described in the thread.
