Koi Show scenario....

The judging has just started and they begin with Size 1. You notice a couple of fish in size 2 are bigger than "YOUR" size 2, which bumps the bigger size 2's to size 3.

My question is: can you request a rebench of fish once the judging has started?

I believe the judges can do so. Once judging begins, I think it too late for an owner to speak.

The owner cannot request a rebenching after judging has started (even if a lower size has started). The owner should be present during benching and witness such and solve descrepancies at that time. Persoanlly, I hate it when an owner drops of their koi and leaves only to question the benching later.

I have also been present

when one of the judges has asked for an immediate remeasuring of what appears to them to be an oversized competitor. They felt by stopping immediately and dealing with the situation nothing would come back to
create adversity for the show and officials.

Last year at the bakersfield show, our showa was benched wrong, they had picked it for Young Champion, Frank seen that it had beat another very nice showa, he went to the show chairman and head judge told him our fish did not deserve to win, since it was larger than size 4. The show chairman with Frank's blessing DQ'd our fish and the other fish was given the Young Champ award.
who wants to win something, that does not deserve it..

regarding Steve's reply

I bench or help bench many of the NW shows and as a norm we ask that owners be present during. But can't tell you the # of times they drop and leave, making those in charge make decisions ( for example: a poor Gin Rin
but great showa pattern-which class)
One of my dearest friends I met while benching their fish, when I remarked of her showa, I just love toshio's fish don't you. Since I didn't know her or her fish she wanted to know how I knew
Similar story with another friend when they entered a shiro bekko, I complimented them on the koi and asked when it had lost it's red. They instantly wanted to know how I knew what happened. So every year when I get back to bench we always have time for each other.
Moral of the story, be there, lots of good things can happen from your participation!

Aquatori, so your saying the other fish looks bigger than YOURS and you feel that fish should be re-benched before they even got to judging those fish? I feel they should if they haven't started yet. Just keeps everything fair for everybody in that size class.

I agree with Nancy, more likely you were there when your fish was benched, and know what size category your in. But to know that your fish is competing in a category where your fish IS at a better advantage because of size you should be honorable and let officials know. You want a trophy that bad just go buy one yourself for yourself.

Very honorable Frank and Nancy!
