My planned showa breeding for next season!!

I am still currently raising goshiki from this years breeding. Probably have about 100 left. For next season, I am planning to breed these three. The female is in the middle and is from Isa. The male on the left is from Takahashi and the male on the right is smaller(14inch) and from Dainichi. What is your opinion of these three as breeders? Any predictions? This is my first time breeding showa. All I know...keep the black ones and watch for deformities. Any advice is appreciated.

We are also planning to breed Showa next year and I am sure that it's going to be fun.
I like your female Showa for breeding. Do you have any other choice for male?

No...just those two. The one on the left has already won best showa in his size. The one on the right is a new purchase...to be delivered in a few weeks. I thought they both brought different strengths to the table. The one on the left is a male who is thick, with a female body type. The one on the right should add that kindai pattern that I always liked.

It's genetics

Let me preface this by saying that I don't know much about fish breeding, but I went to school and have a basic understanding of genetics. If you plan on selling/showing the babies as tosai, customers will be drawn to the ones already finished. Only the breeders with an established reputation will be believed by their customers when they tell them that it will take 4-5 more years to finish. Although I like the body on the male on the left, perhaps you will have a higher percentage of acceptable babies if you breed fish that already are finished. I think that a good source of breeding stock can be had for a reasonable amount of money from the people who compete for Baby Champ and whose fish have already peaked and are in decline. If you have the room and time to grow out a lot of fish, then you have the luxury of being able to prove the wisdom of your breedings if you mate fish that are expected to finish in the future.
So, if you want to breed fish that look good young, you have a better chance of achieving that goal by breeding fish to each other that look good young. If you want good-looking jumbo fish, breed fish that look good when older.
To me this is logical, but logic doesn't always apply.

given these two choices of males. I would go with Dainichi male showa only. it has much, much better shiroji. you want good genes. it's under size for breeding I think. maybe you can a couple loaners from your good friends or other sources.

The Takahashi showa has nice shiroji. It looks pinkish in the photo...probably stress. Both males are about equal in that department. These photos are a little old...more finished now. Need to update them next season.

I know the Dainichi showa on the right. I wouldn't plan on using that fish for at least another year or two - it's only 14" and two years old. I really doubt you'll get much productivity from it. How old are the Takahashi showa and female Isa?

Showa breeders do not throw away the white fry any more. Most kindai showa are from white fry. There will also be kohaku, sanke and the usual assortment of junk in the same spawn.

To increase the percentage of acceptable offspring, pair oyagoi which are as closely related as possible. Ideally, they would be siblings or parent x offspring. Out-crossing strengthens the line, but also increases variability and reduces the number of acceptable offspring. When space is the limiting factor, you need to do everything you can to increase the odds that there will be some good koi in the limited number of fry which can be reared.

I've been wondering about that myself. With the introduction of so much Kohaku and Sanke stock in Kindai quality development, how many "new" showa are still black based???
