Rate this Kindai Showa

58cm. Dainichi. 2.5 years old.
She is expensive but seductive...let me know what you think about her future as an investment.

I certainly like her looks but I'll let someone else comment on the beni quality. To me the beni looks a little uneven but um like I said let someone else comment .

I wish I knew more about showa...
The beni is a bit confusing to me.
On the one hand it looks thick. The paint completely covers up any scale definition,
EXCEPT...
the Sashi and Kiwa, and that is the part I find confusing about the hi plates.
The scalloped look to the Kiwa is one thing, as marusome Kiwa could well be what I'm seeing.
What makes me nervous is the same scalloped edge on the Sashi. There is submerged beni along the leading edges, but the scalloped edge makes me wonder... Where's Dick and JR?

BTW, I REALLY like the luster of the skin and shroji scales...

I've never heard Daiinich talk about their marusome

But when you listen to Toshio Sakai, he talks about his being elastic. Since the sashi is no more than one scale it certainly won't be too long in finishing.
The black has a way to go,tho before it's finished.Under the dorsal is a black line letting you know there is lots more to come up. It's a very pretty koi and imagine it would be fairly expensive.

Dainichi beni develops differently than matsunosuke beni. This beni is fine if you can imagine it as an unfinished beni. That would be a reasonable assumption as the sumi is very young still. You can see the 'youth' of the sumi in the pec fins. That sashi should clean up/ tighten up and the kiwa should come along. I say this because this is a basic good quality fish, I think. Not an elastic type beni though, nor one with hoshi. As I said, very dainichi like. Love the luster associated with Dainichi fish.

I'd watch the feeding on this fish because it looks like it will have the tendency to get very chubby. Not too worried about that though as the tail tube is strong and robust and suggests the bone structure is strong and large and can support some weight within reason. But still, the belly area is looking pretty full at this age.
Honestly I like this fish and think it will be a rewarding fish to raise to full adulthood.
The head will likely broaden out and change the entire feel of this fish. Like to see this one a year or two. Best of luck, JR

Hi, Erns

It is a good quality, isn't it? I like it.

Did you get it in Japan? I just noticed the picture date 09/10/2007 since it's too early to scope up from a mud pond for Sansai kois.... so maybe she was kept in a concrete pond??

A local dealer brought it back with him. So I'm not too sure about the history. The two Dainichi Showas I got at Narita both had certificates of birth but I guess on this one I have to take the dealers word? I like the pattern but the beni and body troubles me a bit. BUT I'm not experienced enough to judge this koi so i've asked for the experts opinions. Showas are also a bit different from Sanke and kohaku. My Sakai sanke I got is only 18months and bigger than this showa.

The showa is over $5000 so she is quite expensive by my standards.

Well, then, you've gotten it.

James Reilly (JasPR) and Junichi Kayano (Super Kindai) are both ZNA judges -- and James is an AKCA judge, too.
