Also, to Steve, can't remember who, but I seem to remember someone telling me the same thing you heard. That the Japanese breeders have their own formulas that they have custom made.

It is not unusual for groups of breeders to have pellets made for them on a cooperative basis. It should be kept in mind that what the serves breeders well in a mudpond is not necessarily a perfect food for koi in a pond. In the mudpond, the food can be high in fats and proteins, and perhaps not too particular about the full range of vitamins etc. The natural foods in the pond take care of any such shortcomings. Expense is a major factor for a breeder, but not so important to the hobbyist... witness koi feeds more costly per ounce than filet mignon.
