Filter Media Comparison

Hi, a friend wants to get some filter media and ask my opinion about which type he should get with the most surface area for the dollar. Any recommendation from the Groups?

K1 or the bio-chip from evolution aqua is very good/but expensive and needs
alot of air to work properly.

Matala matting has the highest surface area per cubic foot of matting and is about 97% free volume. It is not too expensive. It really depends on the type of filter you are using though.

It all depends on how large the pond is (gallons), what the intended fish load will be and how much room your friend has for a bio filter. Either one of these works very well.

My favorite is Kaldnes in a fluidized bed for bio filtration and Kaldnes in a static bed for mechanical filtration. Static K1 filters are VERY easy to clean too.

An

If this was my pond and I was trying to improve/increase my bio filtration, I would first make sure I could remove ALL the waste prior to the bio chamber. Then, I would add a 150 gal. Kormet brand round tank, install a pvc plate with many 1/4" holes drilled in it about 10-12" from the bottom. I would then add 3 bags of K1 and at least 60 litres/hr of air to really get it moving. This would give you plenty of bio for that fish load. The last thing I would do is,..........wait for it...............GET RID OF SOME OF THOSE FISH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
