Yellow head on male koi

What is it about male koi that causes the yellow head and even yellow tint to the body? I think that bothers me more than the male conformation.

I have seen it on female Koi as well, but not very often.

As thought to newbies that they should stay away from koi with that type of tint to the shiroji be it male or female. A gambling man(experienced hobbyist) would probably buy this koi knowing his water and koi diet can clear it up some what. If the koi is cheap enough to test your skill, I would buy it.

It's interesting that you guys brought this up b/c I was just thinking the same thing about a male Hoshikin kohaku that a dealer in SoCal has posted on his website (I refrain from mentioning the dealer and posting a pix of the koi for fear of plagiarism). Considering the cost of the koi, I am pretty sure that the head will clear up. My question is, in male koi with yellow head, will all of them clear up with time/age, or is there a genetic/environmental factor to it as well?

Lam: No. Not even when quite expensive. If out of the mud for more than a couple of months, you should assume that a yellowed male is what he will become.

It's because their pecs aren't long enough.
