question

My pond sits under two trees that have left many leaves. I have cleaned many and will clean many more. I think the pigment from the leaves dyes the water a very dark color. Does this affect the color of the koi? Initial thought would be that lack of light would bring out more color but just a guess. Input appreciated.

Hi Koiamania, A lot of decaying matter in the ponds like leaves could really affect your water quality in turn can cause stress to your koi and as a consequence affect the colors and health of the fish. how big is the pond? how is the water quality? what kind of filter system? any skimmer? if pond not to big netting is helpful to keep leaves from falling in possible option.

If the water is turning a dark color because of the pigment / tannins from the leaves, and you remove the leaves from the pond, you can clear up the dark color in the water by using activated carbon.
