Sanke and Kohaku Koi Eyes

Is there a distinctive difference in identifying Sanke and Kohaku lines? White eyes as opposed to silver-ringed eyes. Is it possible to identify or determine if a fish was bred from primarily a kohaku breeding or from primarily a sanke breeding? Just curious about proper eye distinctions. It may help individuals in selecting/identifying a fishes history, or it may not...

The answer is - "There certainly was once upon a time" but the lines have been crossed so many times the eyes are no longer a positive means of distinguishing one from the other anymore.

JR posted a picture on Koishack of sanke eyes. Apparently sanke have a silver "fern" in the eyes and a kohaku does not have it.

He also points out that that blue eye liner in the pic you posted is a sanke trait; that a pure kokaku would be white.

Not a pic but a graphiic.

You'll find my take on this subject on page 9. As you'll see it was
something I was taught very early on in the hobby and almost
forgotten until the subject was rekindled recently.

However, like a lot koi-related issues, I resorted to earlier publishings
of JR for supporting evidence.

Bern,

Thank you very much. You're awesome! That is exactly what I was looking for. I had remembered the topic coming up "within" one of the older threads, but I couldn't find it using the search feature in the forum.

Aloha,
Carl
