Mosquito Breeding

Hi, I am new to this forum but have been reading many of the post by numerous people... and let me start off by saying, this is a very helpful forum for beginners like me...

I live in INdonesia, where the temperature is high, I noticed that there are mosquitoes breeding in my filter chamber (under the deck)... I aerate my filter, so to ensure the surface of the water is moving. What I do not understand is how come despite, the water is in constant motion (as if I put my hand and swirl it around the filter chamber nonstop), there still is mosquitoes?

What prevention method is the best, I do not want to add guppy nor mosquito fish (risk of disease), adding pesticide(kind of hazardous). I am thinking of buyin one of those bug zapping things... wonder if those will do the job?

Thx a lot

All mosquitoes with which I am familiar only lay eggs in still water. I suspect the mosquitoes are laying their eggs in your pond or in a settlement chamber, with the larvae then being captured in your filters. If the pond has strong circulation, it is most likely a settlement chamber that attracts the egg-laying mosquitoes. You can try covering it with screening/shadecloth... rather inexpensive. May take care of your bugs.

BT mosquito dunks will kill most of the larvae but not harm the fish.

I'll go a different route and question whether they are mosquitoes....midges look like mosquitoes and florish in moving water because they colonize the the hard surfaces

I don't know what products are available in Indonesia (like "dunks" which we have in the USA), but there is a very active Koi community very near you so you should be able to get some good local advice. I do know that quite a few of the folks I've chatted with from your part of the world do use mosquito fish in their filter bays without any problems. As with anything new going into your pond, you need to practice good quarantine protocols to prevent introduction of disease from new fish if you should choose to go that route..

NOWHERE does he say he has free-swimming larva in the water... he refers to "mosquitoes" being there, but NOT in the water.

Hi,

I shall be goin to the US this weekend... where can I find Dunks? Is it some kind of chemical, very effective, costly?

Actually I do see larvae in my settlement chamber, that is what worries me. I shall try with the mosquitoes net cover first. Thanks everyone.

not mosquitos

look closely as i would agree that they are not mosquitos. I have seen similar flying insects in my filter coming from a country with a similar climate with indonesia but upon closer inspection they are not mosquitos.
