What is this

This was floating in my pond this afternoon. It is not dead. Anyone know what it is? This is the best picture I could do. It is just under one inch. It might just be something from the trees as I live in the forest, but I worry about my koi.

thanks

Mike

Forget it

OK, not to worry, it is a stick catapiller. whew... I wonder if my koi will eat it....

It worried me as lately I have been thinking I don't have any medicines in case something happens to my koi.

What do the more experienced koi keepers have on hand just in case?

Mike

Don't know if koi will eat those. I know they do not care for the hairy tent caterpillars that feed on the nearby pecan tree some years. ...Nothing in the medicine chest for caterpillars.

I think you need to dry and season the caterpillers before your Koi will eat them.

Medicines I keep;

Prazi
Acriflavine
Dimilin - (the real stuff)
Ich-X
Mechurachrome
Lamisil
Orahesive powder
Propolis
Amakacin
Baytril
Krazy glue
salt
Tricaine-S

Doesn't Amakacin have a short shelf life or am I thinking of another antibiotic?

Your thinking of Azactam, and thats after you mix the powder with the saline.

Hi Russ, my name is An, good to meet you, i noticed you don't have potasium permangante down on your Medication List, not sure what your take is on potassium, some people swears by it, it is the "best" stuff around to treat from anything to everything, flukes, etc. it is the Nuclear weapons in Koi medicine. and then there are others who refuse to use it and are against it. My understanding is that it's a dangerous medication to use, could easily over dose and have to bypass your filter. Any board members have use potassium before and what do you think. thanks

PP, a powerful and indiscriminate oxidizer, has a place in a koi keeper's medicine cabinet and is very effective for eradicating parasites like costia and trich.

Like other chemicals, overdosing due to improper weighing &/or inaccurate water volume can be dangerous, even fatal.

Handled with care it's a useful tool. Otherwise, you're playing with lightning.

Hi An,

I do not like PP and will not use it for anything. There are safer ways to get rid of anything that potassium can be used for. I think that most people over use it and tend to use it indiscriminantly.

Russ

P.S. I do have another oxidant I prefer, it is called Pro-Oxine.

Russell: Why do you prefer Pro-Oxine? ...I have a definite bias against PP, but accept the notion that it is effective against trichodina where other chemicals fail.
