I've gone from very chilly to warm myself with acclimation, but the description above mentioned "directly". I accidently did this one year when moving fish indoors. Went from chilly to warmer (about 10 degree difference if I recall correctly). Lost 5 fish!!! Never did that again!!!

I am sorry to hear that. I don't recommend what I do to anyone because you just never know what will happen. I do what I do every year and I have never had a single problem. I have done it with hundreds of Koi.

I get several "layover" calls every winter and have found that gradually raising the water temperature on these fish results in far fewer deaths and complications. Now admittedly, many of the pond owners don't notice that their fish are listing until the fish are in dire straights (hard to keep track of the fish's condition under a thick layer of ice) and this impedes the fish's resilience.

I use JR's recommedation regarding filling the QT with chilly pond water and allowing it to very slowly come to room temperature. However, the QT must be very large or the heating is too rapid and must be slowed with cooler water or the periodic addition of some ice.

My slow acclimation method seems to have worked. Both fish are looking well and have been transfered to my quarantine tank at 60deg. The other good thing is the bottom of my pond warmed up to 39deg. I really think the 2 airstones at the bottom caused a super cooling effect. Now that I am only running one air pump..with 2 stones at the surface, things are looking much better. Once again I learned the hard way...but won't make that mistake again. As always...I don't know what I would do without you guys. You've saved my fish, from me, on way too many occasions. Thanks again!!

Glad to hear it is working out.

So gald to hear things are looking better for you AND the fish!! Keep a close eye on the fish indoors now. Often this can be followed by ulcers. Keep the water in good shape and it should be clear sailing until spring!!
