Those kinds of selection articles are good if the one who wrote it is right there with you to pull the trigger on a pruchase.

Hello nguyen4 . . .

Metallic koi often lose their shine/luster as they age, but their hi? There's no reason for a kujaku to lose its hi after a couple of years.

That would depend on how it balances with the rest of the pattern.

Again, that's not a valid generalization. Maybe you misunderstood him -- or took something out of context?

You must have misunderstood. Hi does not break up just because your Koi grows up. There has to be some reason, stress or weak Beni.

Coming back to your "Select Kujaku". There are few characteristic of a Kujaku. Firstly, "Metallic Koi with the reticulated netting pattern of Matsuba" in other word, it must be sheen. Secondly, whether the head must have Beni(Hi) or not (i.e. gold, yellow, orange or red...what ever crap colour), that is not important, but the most important is that the Head must be clear and clean (I personally prefer two colours in the head), not dirty like congested look. Thirdly, the fins must be vibrant and unblemished. Forthly, the beni must be consistence distributed and must show the netting pattern underneath. Not forget the body confirmation!! I am sure some experts here should be able to add on...
