The idea of insurance on mud pond koi is unique to NKF as far as I am aware.

I think for for the level of hobbyists who either travels to japan to buy fish or have someone to purchase at first for him/her, they know what the risks are. I don't think it's reasonable hold the breeders accountable for those risks.

I was curious how many breeders actually treating buyers with business relationship rather than single transaction. despite how costly they fish are, my guess would be most breeders treating buyers with single transaction relationship with some exception for some lucky dudes. Dealers might be in position to compensate certain "value" customers.... one might argue that dealers might be able to twist the breeders arms to replace the dead fish but that's a whole different story. it's all boil down to money!

The Kohaku is gone!!!
We don't know about the Ueno showa yet.

Both these fish were scheduled for the Orlando show this spring!!! Now I'm not sure what we'll do. If the showa is still alive, we likely won't get her in the US in time for that show!!!

Terribly sorry to hear that it is a terrible loss . Hopefully we will see the showa at Orlando show which I so much enjoyed . I was at Mometoro last week and saw some beautiful fish in their grow out pond in the large greenhouse . Some of which belonged to a member of our group . A grow out pond like that would be completely safe . Hopefully the dealer will give you a replacment as such misfortunes do not happen often .
Regards

Well, if a hobbyist spends enough time with a breeder and that means money too the relationship becomes stronger. One can not expect to get the same treatment as a person who spends thousands more. It's the same way at the dealers place. It's nothing new in business....

Eugene, we asked that these fish come home last fall. The Kohaku was never harvested so she stayed in the mud over the winter not a grow out pond from what I understand. I started to seriously worry back then. I just knew something was going to happen....just knew it. She will be replaced and soon I hope.

The showa? We just have to wait to hear, but at least we know she was harvested last fall. Long story why she wasn't shipped then.

Kevin is doing a wonderful job working on our behalf. I have no doubt that all we be "righted" when this all shakes out. I just hope against hope that we haven't lost the showa also. They had terrible floods that caused many roads to close due to mud slides !!! Makes you wonder what shape the mud ponds are in. We just don't know.

Personally, I'll never do this again. I'll pass on the fish if the fish remains in Japan. There are so many fish to choose from that doing this just isn't necessary.
