I bought the Manual of Koi Heath by Keith Holmes and Tony Pitham. It seems pretty thorough. Luckily I haven't had to use it yet. Does anyone have an opinion of this book?

Koi USA article

I'd recommend everyone review the KoiUSA artilce "What an ORP Mater can do for you" and more recently in Koi Nations Oct\Nov issue.
I have used it for years with great results in quarantine systems and in the main pond.
Essentials are:
ORP Meter
Calabration Solution
Hydrogen peroxide

Starting with small amounts according to you pond size monitor the meter, it will tell you right up front.

But, one important point: If you use Amquel or other related products it will dissapte the PP very quickly.

If you have to use an oxidizer such as PP or O3 to keep your pond at a decent ORP level....say at least 250mV.....the load (fish, their food and other organic polution) is too much for the engine (aeration and filtration).

With 2 nexus on 10,000gallons with 35 koi.....ORP this morning was 370mV. If I can keep the ORP over 300....ANYONE can!!!

I hve used it on rare occassions for parasite treatments, but that was long ago. Just been lucky I guess...no real need. I would not hesitate to use it in the future if the situation arises that make it necessary. Some have used it as a paste topically. I've also done that in the past, but won't do that in the future. I've found it can leave a nasty scar more often then not. I do not use it to maintain water quality.

I know of no reason to use PP other than treatment of confirmed infection by trichodina. ...none. Dangerous stuff that, at best, disrupts the natural biofilm/algal communities that define a 'mature' pond. Justifying use on the basis that no harm was observed, or that a mature biofilm can endure if done 'properly', is simply closing one's eyes to the known reality. It is rather like an alcoholic observing that his liver has not ceased to function... yet.

Yea, Luke, you missed out. Just think, Lake Luke could be crystal clear with regular PP treatments and a few gallons of hydrogen peroxide delivered each week.

....Bet your koi are healthier as they are.

Duncan's Book

If anyone wants (should have) Duncans book you'd better order it soon. From my last conversation with him there are about 100 copies left, and no plans to reprint. Not cheap.
If you need the link PM me or Duncan.
