Farne: Yes, I think a Bakki-type filter affects water temps. I loosely wrapped mine the first year with plastic. There was plenty of fresh air for gas exchange, but it was definitely warmer under the plastic on cool mornings. I now leave it alone in an effort to reduce the pond temperature over winter months. ...different challenges in different places.

Thanks Mike for clearing this up. If anything maybe BS would warm things up, ha ha, sorry for the confusion. I had heard the claims that BS would act as chillers being they are in close contact with plenty of cool air, but had not checked to see how much of a differance until Ray Jordan measured his water temp and I checked mine at about the same time. The differance was a 5 degree drop in temp. I also have my BS covered with burlap, and the pipe are wrapped in insulation and filters covered with burlap and plastic. I will keep you informed when I get the heater installed.

Showers and TT's expose more water to the atmosphers and increase the rate of evaporation. Evaporation is endothermic - it gives off heat. Same principle as the old redwood swamp coolers used in buildings before air conditioning was common.
