What are Normal Daily PH fluxuations?

I live in hard water country, San Antonio Texas. I have what I consider a above average water treatment system and great turn-over rates (every 40 min)and weekly 800 gallon water changes for a concrete and polyurea lined pond. I use 200kg bakki house media in a bakki shower and a 9.0 bead filter. Also vortes prefilters and uv light. The pond is 8300 gallons, very clear water, 1 inch of algae growth on walls, DO saturated.

I have noticed during all parts of the year that PH moves. AM hours lower to highs in the afternoon. The shift is 8.2 to 8. 6 in fall and summer 8.2 to 8.8ppm. What is the normal shifts in PH and what does it mean to a pond keeper?

Bob,
.3 swings are not uncommon in sunny areas (like San Antonio). Plants and lagae are the culprits for this swing in PH. Adding shade may help to control that shift you are experiencing (or plant removal if you have any?).

The daily fluctuation relates to production of carbon dioxide/oxygenation. A small shift is normal in Nature. The shift is minimized by aeration, whether through use of aerators, waterfalls, trickle systems or other means; and by KH levels. Algae produces significant quantities of CO2 at night. A shift of 0.5 from early afternoon to dawn is not a concern IMO. If the shift is greater than that, you will want to check the KH levels.

Thanks Mike. The KH was 109 and the GH was 190's last I check a few days ago. I did pick up on trace of ammonia, may be due to a small water change or our hot days with more feeding and cold days with no feeding, also the appearance of more algae on the walls. I am not sure yet, only been two years but the bakki shower with 200kg, I wonder how effective the bio development is since it is subject to outside temp fluxuations. I have found out my water is approximately 5 degrees colder with the BS then others in SA.

Sorry, but neither one keeps the water cooler.

Test it -- you'll agree.

When he said BS I am pretty sure he was referring to a Bakki Shower and not baking soda.

LOL You're probably correct, Rob. My bad.

There's a third BS, too.
