Marie,

I have to agree with Duc, but I think some basic process will prevail. For those who have chosen to max out maybe the best is some of both..................... with quality of shiro and body conformation as the best guide to use.

Thanks for the link.................using that as a guide has made my list longer...............

Oh, and a wee bit of the luck of the draw...................................
these are just pictures ya know how can you choose a koi from pictures????

cmungo,
I guess if you would have read the post before yours, would have provided you the answer

Okay, because it's you, LOL, I'm going to show you my first and only selection (since I'm only getting one). This was my gut choice at first glance at the growout pics, which I discounted for the amount of sumi present and the fact that its one of the smallest fish in the competition. There are dozens of killer fish starting to show their stuff in the other selections offered. Picking between them is going to be an almost impossible chore, so I've made it easy on myself.

Here he is in all his splendor, the Dark Horse #51:

Now if someone gets him before I do, everyone is going to be waiting a looooong time behind me while I muddle over second choice....

If I were picking 2 or 3, I'd get a different type every selection. Sure wish we knew which ones were Panda's and which were Musashi's. That link might help with identifying which might be whom's....

You're welcome.

How can you choose koi from pictures? Use your eye, Grasshopper.....

There will be a koi that calls to you. Look for it. I'm only picking one so this will be critical to me. There's a lot of nice fish in the group that literally glow. Find the ones that call to you and hope they don't call to someone else. *LOL*

well, I am re-doing my list right now. Several that really called out to me still do under the new criteria. I have also moved a lot much higher up on my list than they previously were. Some I discounted because of pattern are now quite high on my list because of their body and shiro. I really think the best way to choose is to throw darts at all the pictures though. There are a few I REALLY don't like....but I'd be happy with most of them. At this size, it's nearly impossible to tell how they will look as adults anyway. I wish I knew what size each was though. That would help a lot.

Marie,

Every time I choose the one "I" its not the best one.................I'm trying to learn to pick the one the judges want...................... or at least one the will not be a total wash.............................................. ...

One of the ones that calls to me is a really, really, really bad Showa...........

Wow, those grow out photos boggle my mind when it comes to pattern! Sumi that looks like it will come up disappears. Sumi that is already up disappears. Sumi comes up out of nowhere. beni that comes from nowhere. I had discounted many of the choices because I thought they had too much Sumi. But, it can recede or disappear leaving a nice balanced pattern or even very little sumi. Then again, some patterns stayed pretty stable. I wanted to see one with beni that disappeared but I didn't or missed it. Some of our choices have beni on them. Then again the progression only shows a year or less. Who knows what further changes will take place.

Ok, so I will look at skin quality and structure but for me it is real difficult. I'm still learning these qualities. But it's fun!

Hi, Musashi is not the daughter of Panda but they are sisters (Panda is older sister). Not only Panda and Musashi but also other famous parents such as Hakuma, Hozan, etc are all daughters of "Tatuma-Uturi"(nickname) as the second generation of Omosako's original female parent. then Omosako Majic has starting since 1993

Thank you for the url on your #80. there is not many opportunity to compare like that at the same time.
and also the following comment had created a great impression to me because you know the right way to start the selections.
so I'm picking for skin quality/conformation and putting pattern dead last.

( Left : male parent, Right : Tatuma = female parent)

Thanks shawn! Those photos answer my questions about the beni. You definately can't discount those with beni from the selection either.

I spent most of the day going through 80+ pics that I narrowed down to last week. I'm down to 30 now.

I picked some of the "no sumi" and a few of the heavy sumi. We'll see what happens when my turn comes around.

Those are amazing transformations. Looking at where those koi started and where they ended up, I don't think there are too many in this group that are going to turn out bad.
