Thanks Marie for the link. Now I have some serious doubts as to my top 15 koi. None of them even came close to resembling the beginning pics! The ones with underlying gray came out completely white! Yikes, some of my top picks look like this. What the heck am I supposed to do now when my turn comes up? We are only 3 days away from the start. Urgggh.

I think that it must be remembered the many changes Utsuri/Showa can go through along its lifepath. I've watched my Showas put on and take off sumi like Paris Hilton changes her clothes, so the Shiros that are seemingly all white at one year may be painted nicely at 3 or 5 years or vice versa. And I think we all know that males develop faster than females, so maybe the ones that are working on the shiro at first and taking their time might be more likely female and present a better fish at a larger size. Remember how small these fish really are--we're probably picking from second cull, maybe third at best. I really don't think we can pick for pattern this early, so I'm picking for skin quality/conformation and putting pattern dead last.

The fish are from two spawns from Omosako--one from his famous Panda, and the other from Musashi. Both were top winners in Japan, and Panda is his greatest producer of Shiro Utsuri.

Does anyone know if Musashi is the daughter of Panda, or from a related breeding?

IMHO, in selecting tosai shiro, your best bet may be to go with quality of shiro and body conformation to the extent they are even large enough to determine that. I just don't think that it is fruitful to concentrate on pattern in this stage of their development.

Oh my.....that link really changes some of my selections!! I am going to start all over today and then see how my 2 lists compare. I think selecting by body and quality of the shiro is going to be a better bet than trying to see a future pattern emerging. This is going to be such an educational event for all who are participating.....and all who are just observing!!
