Well, okay, I guess I was misinformed. Looks like the Sakai family took four titles over a seven year span. Still pretty impressive.

I didn't know about it until 3 days ago myself. I found that link...very cool to see all the GC together. After buying a koi from Yamamatsu, it was good to see them listed. Very impressive koi family!!!

One thing I found really shocking...The first winner was a doitsu sanke!!! I never thought there was a winner that wasn't a standard gosanke. Really surprised me when I noticed it.

BTW, Yamamatsu (Toshiyuke Sakai) didn't win the AJKS, his brother, Toshio Sakai(Matusnosuke) has won, I believe 4 times. His was the 101cm Sanke grown out by Momotaro.

Mike
isn't he more well known for breeding high quality Sanke?

This is not a true statement and having read the website I thought I would once and for all clear the air, so to speak, about this matter. All four Grand Champions of the AJKS listed were in fact produced by Toshio Sakai but two of them were kept by Toshiyuki Sakai to help raise them. Even though Toshiyuki Sakai helped raise them they were still owned by Toshio Sakai. I e-mailed Miwa Sakai last night to ask her father about the information, the following is from her e-mail response.

"Russell, I understand what your confusing very well. These 4 fish were produced all from my father. So the parent fish were all our fish. But I know the record of some said that two champion fish were produced by my uncle and my father.

I heard from my father about it before. He said, he and my uncle had run own fish farm already. They had produced own fish. But when these two fish were small, 70's and early 80's, they still helped each other very much. Then, all our fish in Niigata mud pond were taken care of by my uncle in the summer time. And in the winter time all my uncle fish were taken care of by my father in Isawa, because there was no facility to pass heavy snow season then. therefore, my father decided to enter these two fish for the AJKS as "Produced Together".

Now we have three seasonal staff for our mud pond in Niigata, and our Uncle have many staff and good greenhouse. So we work with them sometime, but not like long time ago. We share the information about the latest news.

Does it make it clear?

I think there are many misunderstanding about Matsunosuke and related things oversees!

Miwa"

Considering that this information, being relayed by Miwa Sakai, is from the man that produced the four AJKS Champions, I hope there will be no arguing the matter.

Mike, you were not misinformed and the information you received was correct. Toshio Sakai won four titles over a seven year span.
