There are laws yes.... and several things come to mind here. Fraud for a start, copyright laws since he is useing someone's pics without permission of the legal owner. The FTC does come to mind here.... along with other complaints to the proper authority's.

Something to think about anyway!

Honestly I don't mean to sound so cynical! I was once as wide eyed and innocent as some of you'll!! LOLs But over time, I have seen so much.

Koi dealing is a unique craft. Because koi have no price, there is opportunity for abuse. It is not unlike the antiques trade or the wine trade. The price is determined on what the market will bare. And for some reason, this attracts some 'interesting characters'. I once knew a koi dealer that was also a fortune teller in his spare time. true! And another American koi dealer I know proudly told me his contact in Japan was from a noble Samurai family of great legend! I knew the guy he referred to well and have had many drinks with him, he is NO samurai! LOLs
we have dealers that are professional gamblers when not selling koi and other dealers that have been beaten senseless by angry, unhappy customers!

In the Japan there is a haiku that goes something like this:

koi dealer
dreamer, kite flier
conman

So this 'personality' seems to be universal? Still I have known some great dealers and breeders- really plenty of true character and not 'just characters'. But you know what they say, It only takes one rotten apple to spoil the bunch.

I always end these type postings, as cynical as they might come across, with this montra- The koi are innocent---

Just keep in mind that we don't know the whole story. It's just speculation. I have been aware of the koistop's claims for more than a month and still can't see how their claim isn't fraudulent. There are three parties involved. The koistop.com, the dealer, and then the owner of the fish. We have heard from Matthew, but not the other parties. Also, we still have no idea if "thekoistop" and koistop.com are linked. I for one think this is a great example of how being organized on a forum gives us as a group more power.

Richard,

do you have any thing to do with koistop.com ? Their web said it is a partnership with San Joaquin Valley extension and Genki Nishikigoi.

Just saw this thread...sorry to have started another!! But these guys, whoever the are, are not on the up and up!! They show my RGC Kohaku as being one they brokered. They even have a picture of her and my name under the photo!!! I'm not happy!!! If you try to email them the only way you can contact them if if you go through an item they have for sale (which by the way, is not at all related to fish). Can anyone help me reach this idiot?

Well, the way I look at it is:
  • The guy is using Kevin's eye to select fish...A dealer with no eye for koi has no knowledge to share and can not be trusted to buy fish from.
  • From what it looks like is he is trying to bring down someone's business who breeds domestic koi. By saying "Why waste your time with domestic koi"....
  • The guy has no credibility as a koi dealer, he only has Genki's name to ride, which is a complete bad move....
  • Who wants to buy from a guy who sell everything and even the kitchen sink....C'mon Wedding Favors? Is this what koi dealers sell?
JMHO,
Tony

I sent Kevin an email to alert him to this. Dan, I'm sure you did the same thing.
