It's simple, all you have to do is change your bulbs to the flashing kind.LOL

I have wondered my self how they do it as I have never seen it happen. I just walked by, as I often do, to see if the inhabitants are doing well and I see a Koi tail sticking straight up out of the skimmer.

This is what I welded up out of stainless a few years back after my Shiro kept "dumpster diving" in the skimmer and took most of the sumi off her face...............

The next time I do a water change I will try and remember to take a picture of what I used to screen the skimmer. I bought a piece of 1/4" ABS plastic sheet and cut 1" slots in it and then screwed it to the wall over the skimmer opening. Normally the water flows about 1" in depth over the top of the screen and through lower openings. The stuff is flexible enough to conform to curved walls and using the self taping concrete screws makes it easy to attach them.
