Does anyone out there have a good method or know a good product for disinfecting nets, bio balls, aquamats, etc? Thanks for any suggestions!

You can use bleach if you clean it really well afterwards or use dechlorinator.

Potassium Permanganate (PP) is cheap and works just as well.

You can use household bleach, but need to rinse thoroughly and neutralize residues with sodium thiosulphate. Potassium Permanganate disinfects thoroughly. At shows, benzalkonium chloride is often used. (I seem to recall that for KHV disinfection, a dosage of 1,000 ppm of benzalkonium chloride for at least 1 minute exposure is recommended. A much lesser dosage is generally used with a longer soak time, but ...)

Thanks for the suggestions! I have PP and was actually thinking of using it (every now and then I have a thought that actually makes sense). Any suggestions on what strength to use for how long? I will be placing the material to be disinfected in a 25 gal. muck bucket.

some products are hard on the items (bleach)

so they're not kidding about a complete rinsing.

You can also use Vircon Aquatics for both in pond treatment or complete rinse.

Funny story, Virkon is a great disinfectant and in fact is used widely in Japan. Kari discovered that it is manufactured in California so she placed an order. The company called her back and said "We can sell it antwhere in the US but California". It seems that California has the highest EPA standards in the US and the cost to meet the requirements is worth the amount they would make selling the product. What a hoot, it is good enough to sell anywhere but California.

Sorry to resurrect this thread.

What would be the problem with using potassium permanganate as a net dip at a show? There would also be a rinse tank Potassium permanganate kills many virus in 30 seconds at 150 ppm. However, I have not seen any reference to using it as a safeguard against KHV or SVC.

Thanks,
-steveh
