question on winter

I have my waterfall going now. I live in Eastern Pa. Is this OK or should I not be circulating the warmer water from the bottom of the pond? Thanks

Well, it was 19 degrees this morning so it was probably near freezing since the top had some ice on it.

why do you say that??? Koi can live under ice as long as there is a whole in the ice.

Koi do not do well in 19 degree water. Are you sure that is correct?

Is it 19 degrees Farhenheit or Celsius? If it's Farhenheit, then it's one frozen koi!!!!

I am sure he means the air temp is 19.

If you have 3'+ depth and a deicer to keep a hole open you will be fine. As for the waterfall, a pond have to be pretty deep for significant temperature stratification to occur. WHat you need to be really careful about it that ice and snow doesn;t start to build up around the sides of the waterfall and divert the flow out of the pond. (This happens to people alot, even after years of having no problems.)

I meant that the air temp was 19 not the pond water. My temperature was about 44 degrees a couple of days ago but the air temps were warmer. My concern is that the waterfall will lower the temps too quickly. My pond is 4 ft deep so there should always be above freezing temps near the bottom of the pond.
