Thanks everybody. It's some very usefull info. It will be my dealers challenge to see what he can line up from so many different breeders!

I did some research of my own and found that if I had to make up two boxes it seems like I would be able to get everything I'm looking for at Kawakami and Hosokai? But I'm not really familiar with Kawakami? Anybody been to his place?

I would like to buy them as tosai and grow them for a season or two to study and then keep one or two (if any) and sell them on again. I now have my core collection of 15 good koi down but one always have to be getting the next generation comming through the ranks to keep up!

Based on your fish I do not think that you would be happy with any two boxes they would have to be tosai purchased individually . These you can get
at an auction but the really good ones go to Asia and only breeders like Momomatro can offer really high quality as simply not enough are produced .Momotaro produces 6 million fry from incredible parents most over 90cm . Dealers will sell individual fish in larger sizes one that I saw was over 50g but incredible fish .Tosai of high quality will sell at an auction for a $1000
or you can get lower priced ones but in the long run if you do not have a mud pond to grow them in I would not bother with tosai .
If you get 50 or a 100 tosai you will have to sell most of them . Here lies a problem as you are not likely to find 50 people that will pay you $500 a fish and that is what they will cost you to raise them for 2 years . So you will have to wholsale them to other dealers or breeders which is your only way to get rid of them . At that point you will have to give them a bill of sale and declare for tax purposes . The good part is that you can run a financial loss
which is sure to happen and use against future capital gains or so it is in most countries . Been there done that

Eugene

Hi Eugene,

I do not think Erns is a dealer so he would not be able to write off the loss.

Hi Erns,

I have bought from Kawakami since the first time I went to Japan. I really think you can get some nice pieces from him but you need to, or have some one else, hand select from his facility to get those jewels. I think if you just ordered a box you might not be totally happy with what you get.
