I remember that breeder panel, Luke. In retrospect, the problem was not only interpretation (which was problematical), but also the asking of questions outside the breeders' area of interest/concern. The real benefit of being able to talk with the breeder is to learn about their fish, how they develop and why a particular fish was not kept for another season in the mud. Instead, they get asked about filtration, about water quality issues, etc., etc., rather than the special knowledge they have gained from their daily experience.

yes try as I might, i cannot forget it either.
And now that you brought it up THAT was another nauseous aspect...
Fellow Bit-ites, YOU HAVE NO IDEA..
imagine my horror after hearing some of the answers to intelligent, thoughtful questions be given abbreviated three word replies after a protracted sicussion by the panel of breeders, to have a person in the crowd ask, " Should I keep goldfish in an aquarium with my Oscars? and will an undergravel filter ever need to be cleaned?"
I don't think anyone around me got to hear their response as i was grumbling to loud.

luke, I have been to a few of those myself. But in both cases it was a panel composed of japanese judges with the best interpreter in the world ( Joel Burkhardt) and the mentality of the audience from the hosting club.Naturally it was packed with every newbee. bring the same judges back now to that crowd and with the advancement the club has made would be a different
situation.

I think the difference here is the caliber of the attendees, who have long passed the oscar goldfish stage and are serious about filling in the more difficult edges of their knowledge. As had been suggested, i think the concept of advanced questions selected prior to the event yet provided by attendees is the best way to go......

As one who has been down that road of trying to answer questions from fellow hobbyist, there is a language barrier and believe me more so here in California...Try to answer questions from a hobbyist were english is a second language..Not very easy...hahahahahahaha...

Awhile back, I was fortunate to have spent some time with kentaro Sakai, when he was learning english by working with Joel Burkhardt. At that time it was really brought home that the japanese language had many great words
for things that were not immediately transferable to english as there were no words. It was frustrating at times but it helped me to understand and progress culturally as well as hobby wise. I would not trade that time for anything.

Dispite this possible loss of information in translation, there is no reason that a dedicated student can't get something valuable from attending an opportunity to learn from 6 different breeders.

Much has been said about the cost, as compared with other breeder seminars being made available at a similar time. Those for the alternative say you get an entire time with one breeder for minimum charge and maximum exposure. the other counters with the cost of having 6 different opportunities to learn from different breeders, the comparison is like apples and oranges. . This is an excellent time as well to purchase koi from these
Japanese breeders. I think it might be fun to compare the koi produced by 6 different breeders at the same time in the same location.
In the end I hope both opportunities to learn are supported because sucesses will lead to other opportunities in the future for the good of the hobby

I would love to go to both events and get the best of both worlds but I don't know if my wallet can handle it. Boy you guys are lucky that live in California! Easy drive to either one. I'm sure whereever I make it I will be in heaven!!!

Las Vegas

I plan on attending the event this March in Las Vegas. I had the wonderful opportunity to listen to Kodama-san in 2006 speak for close to two hours on the assessment of Nishikigoi with his son Taro as the translator. I was a wonderful event!

Listening to Kodama-san speak in Japanese and then having it translated by Taro was a very memorable moment for me. The "Passion for Koi" is a universal language that poured out in the presentation. I will never forget it.

I am looking forward to a similar event in Las Vegas, of course coupled with a major win at a poker table and possibly a super sexy tosai for the trip home.

BONE, please give more details on the other event that is driving distance from California.

kodama

I have enjoyed the kodamas in events as well. Taro is so kept busy translating, knowledgeable and outgoing, his dad more reserved, confident
they make a good team together. Also because of their connection with the breeders, I really think that they will have an excellent knowledge of participants as having been there in their travels. The books written have really contributed to the general knowledge about some pretty specific topics in what makes a great koi. Sheesh all this talk is getting me excited about the event.

Had a nice talk with Dan Olson last night on the phone. The North idaho club is featuring Toshio Sakai in September at the PNKCA event they are hosting.
So if you have to miss the event this February with Russ and Camellia, I certainly hope you can come this fall and catch this man's koi and presentation.

I'm really grateful to see these kinds of educational events being planned.
Nothing like this was ever dreamed of when I first got started in koi. What an opportunity. certainly hope you'll be able to take advantage of as many as you can.

February Shows

The No. Cal show will be hard for me to make. The California Lanscape Contractors Association has a show within a few days of that event in Los Angeles and if I'm not mistaken the San Diego Koi Show will be within a week or so of that event. Thanks for the info.

Respectfully,
