Koi Nations/Vegas Breeders Class

I signed up for the Koi Nations Breeders Class in Vegas!!! All the info is now posted on www.koinations.com/vegas. March 21st-23rd. Six breeders will doing presentations there. Raffles, auctions, door prizes!! The list of raffle items are real nice. Each breeder will be giving one nice Tosai away as a door prize. I think this will be a blast!! Is anybody else signing up?

so who's in charge of the weather?

I think what will be educational is to hear directly from the breeder how to understand what they are producing. Let's face it, this event is unique in so much as it's a chance to bring their product to the states and explain it to many who may not have had the opportunity to travel to Japan. From a human nature stand point, I think you'll agree, they'd be honor bound to bring some of their best work which will be a treat to see, learn about and maybe add to your collection.

"Taro Kataoka of Oya Koi Farm produces various varieties of top quality Nishikigoi. However, they are best known as the leading breeder in Niigata for their Sanke which has a deep black Sumi and bright Hi patterns on snow white bodies"

Uhhh, Dick, please have Michael clean up this bit of hyperbole! Less our buds Sakai Isawa, Sakai Yamamatsu, Torazo and Dainichi go ballistic!

While were on the subject of breeders that will be present, what do you think of the six that will be present. Any insight or comments on the individuals and /or Koi Farms. JR or others? They are:

Hajime Isa
Hoshikin Koi Farm
Shigeyoshi Tanaka from Maruji Koi Farm
Miya San from Miyatora Koi Farm
Masayuki Sekiguchi of Sekiguchi Koi Farm
Taro Kataoka of Oya Koi Farm

well to start things off, let's talk showa

I think when you start naming names, Isa comes up pretty early in the discussion. Besides for many who know this individual as a human being there is a great deal of fondness. I would imagine what he has to share will be well received.

Daniel, I like the fact that these are the new generation. These are the kids of the personalities I know ( except for Isa). They should be very different than their dad's in style and delivery. They are not the top breeders of Japan, but good solid breeders with a lot of experience for their ages. A good time should be had by all that attend.
The key will be , as these Breeder events usually are, about the quality and ease of translation. It is important that the translator know KOI as well as have translating abilities, as this has always proved to be the difference between correct interpretration/education and confused jumbled answers.
I'd keep the questions straight forward and not complicate communication with difficult complex topics. In fact, submitting the questions before hand is always a good idea. JR

It's not like you get this information in Japan. You get the opportunity to purchase fantastic fish but the breeders aren't sitting in a tea room with an interpretor explaining the merits of fish and breeding. I agree with Jim- good questions provided ahead of time with an accomplished interpretor is the KEY!

I went to AFKAPS one year. THE UPPITY-SCHMUCKS TRIED REAL HARD TO MAKE IT THE BEST EVENT THEY COULD.
it was unfortunate that there was a need for an interpreter. I don't try to attend shows which need interpreters.
so much is muddled by ANY interpretation... An american-speaking japanese breeder would be worth it.
and to ask a question!
it goes like this:
YOU- Could you ask X-san the difference between bone structure of X breeder and yours between tosai and yosai?
INTERPRETER- (20-30 seconds of japanese)
BREEDER- (2 minutes of japanese)
INTERPRETER- "Yes, there is difference"
