Hi Kent
what do you mean by depends on how it's plumbed?could you elaborate more since I'm newbie here
I have 20 tones pond with filter about 7 tones.
filter consists of 8 chamber including vortex and pump chamber
the system is down up flow..(is it what you mean?)
now after vortex I set the next chamber as settlement chamber without media and the rest is filled bioballs.
I plan to put filter media in settlement chamber for better mechanical filtration.
need your comment

Hugh, A more open matting is better in prefiltraion setups, The object is to keep the larger stuff out of your pump.

I assume that your vortex is a settling tank. if so, the water in your settling tank must be spinning really fast and didn't allow enough time for debris to settle. Am I correct so far? if yes, let me know. I have some suggestions.

my first filter is vortex but unfortunately debris still go to next chambers (bioball).
Recently I moved bioball in chamber after vortex and hoping it would settle the debris but not.
I plan to use brush in that chamber, the other still using bioballs. what do you think?
which one you thing better, brush or japmat for mechanical filter instead of biological filter?

I am a bit confused by your description. usually, the settlement tank should be the first tank after water leaving the pond if you have bottom drain. maybe it helps if you can draw a block diagram of your water circulation path.

The vortex is your settling chamber. The settling chamber will only get large waste that's heavier than water so it's normally followed by a fines filter. Some most folks use a bead filter because it's so easy to clean if it's properly sized to the pump. Brushes and cheap, fairly open mats are good at catching fines but a pain to clean if you do it often.

I say cheap because the DIY crowd calls me a cheap azz DIYr.

Welcome to the board and don't worry about some of the kidding. The rest of those guys are a bunch of jerks.

I was bouncing off you with a joke. But I'd rather be that than koicop.

Hi steve,
here is the draw (sorry for the format, the best I can do)..
my vortex catch quit much waste but still small particles goes to next chambers even to pump chamber.
as all you know it's a pain to clean the bioballs particularly in second chamber
that why i move the bioball from the chamber and plan to put other media and make is as mechanical filter instead of biological as it was.
my vortex doesn;t spin fast enough (is it wrong? how to make it fast?)

In this hobby we call it a vortex but actually a vortex is the last thing you will want for settlement. The slower the better,(to a point) it will allow finer material to settle.

Hey KOICOP I hope you didn't take offence at my comment about being called koicop. I was kidding, ya know. Welll ya auta no!
