Shawn, are our growout Shiros tosai or under a year? Very few actually look like yearlings, more like 6-9mos, and will be tosai in spring. Any clues?
Hi,
It seems to me that all growout Shiros are under a year = tosai ( or Ake nisai since we are in 2008)
Sizes are different maybe because early breeding (May) or late breeding (July/ Aug), grew up in different mud ponds, male or female. Also pattern and quality effect on size in general, although there are always exceptions...

Thanks Junichi. I'm always confused about what is tosai and what is fingerling and so on. Does Ake Nisai mean then, "almost 2 years old?" And anything under a year is tosai, even fry and fingerlings? I'm sure I'll get this straight eventually.

Yes, some of these fish look like spring babies and others autumn babies--with some huge developmental differences in the group from age and gender, habitat and type. Thanks for your insight. It helps me form my own....

Hey, I wonder if the male parent stock is known beyond there being two Shiro males and one Showa male per spawning female. Is the intent of using the Showa male for producing the Tanchos like we have here, or is there another reason besides?

Hi Marie.

Fry = "Kego" mean a hair baby....just a tiny new born size.
Fingerling = "Chi Gyo" more or less 1" and over size
Tosai = more or less 4 to 5" and over size....now, it looks like a koi

In general, we can call the grow-out shiros as Tosai until the breeding season of this year 2008.
In the strict sense of the word, it supposed to be called as Tosai until the end of the last year 2007. then it supposed to be called as Ake Nisai, since we are already in new year, until the breeding season of this year 2008. Yes, Ake Nisai mean... it will begin a second year soon / in a few months...something like that...(haha..)

A little thing that I know is Omosako Uturi once crossed with Dainichi Showa' male in order to improve its body and D-Showa' male is/are still being used in order to get some candidate of male parent(s)...... Me too, always wanting to know something deeper ......

What makes it really confusing is when Momotaro advertises fish as 2 year old but born in Jul o6 so that makes them a year and a half old .
Yet the Nisai Center advertises 2 year old fish as not yet 3 . So a 50cm female at 2g was a good purchase yet it was nearrly 3 year old so now at 5 and a half year is 26 in . So it is best to ask date of birth as translations of ages can be deceptive and if paying large amount of money one should have photos of parents . All my dogs never cost me more than $500 and I had option of complete papers for $100 more
Regards
Eugene
