night time behavior

Ever since I installed a heater in my pond, I have noticed one odd behavior with my largest kohaku (30"). It is dark the lights have been out for a couple hours and she is lying still on the bottom, no movement, pectral fins firmly back against the body. The other koi are swiming at the surface. Within minuets she is off the bottom and at the surface thinking it is feeding time. I understand the first thought is flukes, but I see no other ill symptoms with her or her buddies. Has anyone else noticed this activity. If she is an early sleeper, she reminds me of myself.

I am noticing the same thing in one of my heated tanks. Maybe they just want to be cold.

Hello Bob . . .

Does she bottom-sit during the daytime, too? Maybe even gulp air and blow bubble streams?

All my koi one time or the other seam to gulp at the surface, mostly morning or evening, when there may be a small amount of foam and I believe they are hungry. I feed very lightly, wheat germ two handfuls for 11 koi once or twice per day.

When I noticed her on the bottom, I did not note the surface gulping of other koi. After I turned the outside lights on, she was laminated and by the time I returned with the camera she was swimming with the others.

She is sitting infront of a tpr which is discharging warmer water. I have not seen her on the bottom during the day time, this weekend I will check on her during the day.

In early evening after the sun goes down, all of my koi gather together in a particular area and settle near the bottom. The time of year does not matter. When the moon comes out, they can be seen swimming, nibbling on algae and generally moving around all areas of the pond, albeit slowly. I do not have lights near the pond. When it is dark without the moon, a flashlight is needed to see what they are doing... and it's not much in the pitch black. (The flashlight disturbs them.) With even pale moonlight, they move about. .... Perhaps your gal prefers a bit more light than the others.

I just checked mine with a flashlight. Some are gliding around mid water and some are on the bottom.

My water temp is about 60* right now.
