Wow!

Cool VIntage Piece! Thanks for sharing.

Shoot, I was only 1, I don't have it! I do however have some cool vintage baseball cards.

Maybe luke frisbee will have it. Apparently he's an old timer that had is first Koi back in the summer of 62'.

I'll love to get my hands on an original copy and hang it on the wall of my office.

Who wrote the koi article inside Tony? TFH published Glen Takashita's koi book that same year.

Haven't seen that one Tony. Found a magazine published in Hiroshima from the early to mid 70's in a used bookshop in Tokyo one day though, about 35 of them in total. Went back a few days later with the cash to buy and they were already gone. Kicked myself for not just going to the ATM, getting the cash and buying them on the spot. Doubt I'll ever find them again.

That's right Steve. Glenn's book was published in 1969 in the USA as well by Axelrod's company TFH publications ( Neptune New Jersey). Axelrod was smitten by koi in the 1960s and for a while built joint business alliances with Kamihata and others. Axelrod was a sharp businessman and had already secured rights to many European lines of equipment. Later he was to be the sole importer of Ehiem filters for instance. He had a dream at one point of breeding koi in Florida ( in it's day, Florida was THE place for tropical fish breeding in America).

Great find, Tony. That has to be the earliest large distribution piece about koi in the U.S. [JR: Know any earlier mass audience material?]In the '60s, TFH had real impact on the fishkeeping hobby with every issue. There was no electronic media relating to fishkeeping. When TFH had an article on an obscure Rasbora, every pet shop in the country had people coming in asking for some. ....Articles often matched availability of certain fish from Florida farms and importers in which Axelrod had an interest. So, yeah, there was a manipulative aspect to it, but TFH opened doors. After that issue, I'm sure interest in koi took a leap in the U.S. ... if anybody could find them.

Mike, here's one from 1963, six years earlier. But to be far, the content of garden pools is about water gardening transitioning to fish ponds. The koi section os referred to as Japanese colored carp "koi". Also a TFH publication. Check out the koi identification chart---
