The Hi Showa is a long way from a show fish for several reasons to my thinking. I like the general look of it for a pond fish, but the beni has some breakup going on, some of he sumi has a definite brownish color to it, and the pec fins are poorly formed. Nice in the pond, but don't take it to a show. The other fish will make fun of it and give it an inferiority complex...
I always have trouble knowing if the beni is breaking up or may get thickier. What tells you the difference on this Hi Showa?

I have trouble with it too sometimes, but on this one the beni behind the pecs has a splotchy, thin look to it. There also seems to be some thinning in the area just ahead and below the front of the Dorsal fin, but the photo angle can mess with the appearance of color so its hard to be sure.

ok here is some much better pics.

My kohaku is show fish but i don't have picture, and the show is right next to my house. Last year there was this new koi guy that brought 25 petco bought koi fish. No joke!! Well, people laughed like it was.

I was there when he ask a judge what kind of koi does he have. The old judge was tip toeing around being nice but the asian guy said to him do you want me to be honest? Man, he laid into him for five minutes asking him how much he paid for all his fish and telling him that he should pay more for one. he said he had to many fish (especaily since the guy siad his pond was 3000g-only one fish was over a foot!) and he should not have brought them that they were bad pond fish.

It was crazy! My fish won't get that reaction! they hope!

These pictures aren't much better. Do you have a viewing tub you can use? Pictures of one Koi at a time with a closer view would be better.

It really looks like the Beni on the larger Koi is breaking down.

First off, can you put the fish in a big enough tub so the fish can not damage themselves and let the fish rest a for a couple of days before attempting to take pics again. Sorry if I come off pissed, but proper equipment is a must in this hobby.

ok

they weren't fapping around or anything. I am cooling the water down because i am placeing them in the pond soon. the water is 50% now and they were placid. they swam into the lawndry basket with ease, stayed there for a minute and did not thrash about when i pulled them up a little.

There fine. ya i just snap a few photo's and when i looked at the photos when the fish were back i realized i should have got some closer shots from the front. it was to late for that and i won't be takeing more photo's for awhile.

hey, the fish is born in 2006. couldn't she be developeing her sumi rather than it breaking up?

here is the closest picture i took...after i punched the big one in the stomich. joke.

Looking at these last closeups I'm sure Russ and Tony are right.
They need some time to relax before re-bowling for new pix, you need a bigger tub for photo's, and the beni on Ice Cube looks to be breaking up and thinning in several places. It could be stress induced or genetic. Only time will tell.
It may be that the discrepancy on the advertised size of the Showa is because they used an old photo for a fish that had to be held back for a time for health reasons.

Rookie question: Jonomo, you mentioned that the showa was born in 2006 and is already 23-24 inches. I am not trying to question her age, but for those that are more experienced out there, is this possible for a koi with only two growing seasons? I have seen koi born in 2006 in the 19-21 inch range before, but 23-34 inches? Anyways, just curious is all.

Rookie comment: I also agree that the beni on the showa is breaking up. And as far as the white ice-cube window is concerned, I am sure that it's a fault....how much of a fault, I am not sure. However, with luck, hopefully the sumi will cover it. Depending on how this koi develop, I don't think that she will be show-ready until at least a couple of years down the road.....if she develops right. Just my opinion is all.

thank, for the info

that blue thing had not been a problem in the past with koi i just got. i wasn't sure the koi wouldn't fit. infact the koi just sat there and there was no stress of the koi trying to get out so i pull them out and took the photo's.
the water is now 50% and they move around enofe in the cold but not as much as they were when the water was 65%. this would be expected.

hey here is my pond you koi critics!

One more rookie question, would this koi be called aka sansai since she is going into her third growing season? Am still confused as heck as to how the Japanese naming system works.....grhhhhhhhhhhh.
