Asagi looks pretty clean...the reticulation looks uniform in development, head a bit yellow, maybe male? Anyways, when i first got into the hobby I had my fair share of Asagi and Aka matsuba in my pond...

Kntry: Most of the Asagi fry in a spawn will show their dark scales as tosai to a far greater extent. But, most become far too dark, with the sumi 'rising' to the point of being more gray (or even blackish) than blue. These are culled or sold off quickly. The good ones progress more slowly, and the best have underlying sumi that stays under control to give a clear blue. (Dick's avatar, I think, is just about perfect for her age.) By my limited eye, I think you have a potential treasure. If it had been hatched in Japan, I question that it would have been available for sale when you got it. I am envious...and look forward to seeing progress shots!

Jomoma: Yes, 'she' is very light, with the flanks quite white. This shows in the blue bowl. Actually, there is some blue from the bowl reflecting on the flanks making the side seem a bit more bluish than in person. If you saw 'her' in a green or black bowl, the blue tone across the back would be more clear. .... I think price is a matter of personal opinion. I do not usually mention price. This time I did, and probably should not have done so. I would have been willing to pay more, and I told the breeder that I thought he was pricing 'her' too low. He stood by his price. I accepted. I am pleased to have 'her'. I will get far more enjoyment than I paid, which is all that matters. Fortunately everyone has their preferences. That diversity is part of what makes koikeeping such a joy.

Good info,

I'm used to looking at 2+ year asagi's. If i expand my pond i will get one and probably pay twice what you did. Up to 100 would be my budget on a young asagi so i should keep my mouth shut. you got a good deal. I still would like a lighter head.

You dudes have the expeirence to know a good koi and how it will grow out but to me 35.00 is a good price but no steal.

regards form a novice busybody
When you are looking for a young Asagi you want to see what you are looking at here with this one. The body being light is a very good thing. If Asagi Tosai are dark with too much blue they tend to be darker and dirty when they get older. $35.00 is an excellant price for this quality.

Yellow heads don't always mean "male".

... The hump may be an early indicator of a stubby body. It's something to watch for.

Unlike many Gosanke & Shiro Uturi, I personally have never seen a stubby body shape of mature Asagi.......maybe because it is the primitive & very strong fish...

Nice Asagi. it is interesting for me to see her again in near future.

Thanks for the explanation. I don't know much about Asagi but I'm learning.

Dick, I haven't seen her parents. I'm going to have to ask Mat for pics.

Mike, I'll be posting a lot of pics. I can't wait to see her in person.
