KOi Farm

Hi,

Just wondering about the koi farms... I often heard the famous names such as Sakai is known for it's voluptuous body, Momotorao is known for it's capability to reach monster size. DAinichi known for Showa, and Omosako for their Shiro. How bout Ogata farm? I am still a noobie and would like to hear from the guru's here bout their experience of the many different farms, to assist me in learning about the koi's of each farm (especially because the price are huge difference).

Each breeder has differing levels of quality and therefore, pricing. They go hand in hand. The names you mentioned among some others are very famous and have a high reputation with the serious collector/hobbyists around the world. The last name you mentioned, Ogata, breeds many varieties rather than specializing in a few as the others mentioned by you. However, when talking quality levels, the comparison is like "apples and oranges". Ogata is not yet in the same league with Sakai(Matsunosuke), Dainichi, Momotaro or Omosako. It's like shopping at Nordstroms versus J.C. Penney!

Mike,
You forgot Sakai of Hiroshima. In my book no. 1 producer of high quality kohaku.

If were to compare who makes more money I would have to say Sakai then Ogata, if he can pull in more than $15 million in sales a year then I would say he is happy at where he is at. He is focused in moving numbers pretty much the Chinese way of business.... Anyways, out of all the above mentioned Ogata has won the All-Japan first.
