Well, if it's only common on the west coast, that means it will cost a fortune in these parts....if it's even available!!

Nah...it ships light. This piece weighs about as much as a postage stamp:

I've got softball sized and larger in my bakki. I think I spent under $20 for it all. Did I mention that it floats? It took over a week for mine to completely saturate and sink.

Hi Mike, yes stainless is an expensive product and the beauty of those who
manufacture it into shapes is the fumes from the tac welding is cumulative in the lungs and harmful. So it's not cheap to work with for safety reasons!

It looks like I will not be able to make the Toshio Sakai Seminar this year and i'm really disappointed. I'm sure Sharon is in, and i know Dan wants to pending no gliitches at work. Our mutual koi kichii's Judy and Greg will interrupt their Mexico adventure to be on hand. Be sure and meet them please. Judy has just selected one of Toshio's better GR Showa's to grow on
and it's very impressive. They're from the state that boasts about their Potatoes (idaho)

Hi Steve, do you mind posting your fiberglass bakki shower design/pixs when you have a chance? Would love to see it.

Some breeders say you get the same effect with BioBalls as the BH...I guess the budget factor is a big part on what you use...Plus one must know if the water parameters will work good with a shower system.

Can't wait to see it, Birdman. Set?! How many are you making? Will they be for sale for the general public? I think that the success of any filter system design is in how effective it is and not what it is made of. Besides, I think that fiberglass is pretty durable so I don't see why it can't be as effective as the stainless steel Bakki showers. Please keep all of us posted on the type of media you use and your pond's water condition when you use it. Congrats, Steve!

As far as media type is concerned, all as I know is it is dependent on the surface area....whichever media has the most surface area should be the most effective. I don't know how the SA of bioballs is compared to that of BH, but I suspect that it should be much less. Just my rookie thought!

The useful surface area is one of the reasons I'm wanting to try the Feather Rock. It has a coarse crystalline structure that allows as much water to flow through it as over its surface. Colonization inside and out on a mineral rich substrate ought to kick butt

Dick

Sorry to hear you won't be coming. I think I met Judy in Japan. Wasn't she with Sharon this past October?

Larry

The only concern I have about the porosity of the feather rock is that it may do the same thing as lava rock - Once the pores are filled and the bacteria begin to slough off, won't you lose that amount of surface area, thereby making it much less than desired? How about the media that Aqua UV makes for their Ultima filters? There's supposed to be 700+ sq ft /cu ft of surface?!?!
