Sanke or Kohaku Culling

Beautifull and hot summer time in Sunny South Africa at the moment. The koi's belly's are hanging fat with eggs and my prize winning Tancho Sanke's anus is protruding about a cm from her body, looking like she is going to dump a whole lot of eggs in my pond at any time.

I decided to mover her and prepared my spawning tank yesterday. Nice clean brushes and spawning net and clean water. I placed her in the tank at about 16h00 and added the only male in my collection, a beautifull Kohaku with brilliant white and hi. They are a close match in size with both being just short of 70cm.

This morning she did not disappoint whan at 06h00 the fun started. It is now 3.5 hours into the spawning and they both seem to be enjoying themselves. Loads of eggs, foam on the surface, amonia in the air.

My question is now "What do I cull for?". Do I go for Kohaku or do I go for Sanke. Any advice would be great.

Patience. Why don't you wait and see what mother nature has in store for you and the offspring. Personally, I'd be looking for the best of both varieties. Just keep the very best of each and pray they come out the way you would like. Study their attributes and see if the spawning between these two is worth another round. How old are the parents (oyagoi)? Who knows, the may even work better with a son or daughter next time.

Good Luck

I was thinking the same. Saving the best of each would give you the chance to see what quality you may get in both varieties so you can narrow the focus next year. If you are lucky you may have good results with both and double your chances.

Due to concern about future shimmies, I'd stick to Sanke.
