Hi Dick, Mike,
I agree with both of you like I said in one of my posts there are always exceptions And you can not denie a truly great koi By the way I have had a kindai showa for 7-8yrs a male that is the same type as the one Junichi posted . Chai and junichi have seen it and gave positive imput. Still waiting for sumi to complete at 25". Nothing is written in stone.

You got that right!LOL I've been waiting 4 years on a then nisai male Yagengi Kindai Showa to complete! Don't think it ever will. It's now 6 years old. Time to donate to the school. They have a breeding program and the kids get first hand knowledge of animal husbandry and wetlands management. They do a great job with the fish and the kids, so I don't mind helping them. Besides, it keeps my stocking density down (a little anyways-LOL)!

just for the record

In japan, as the professionals go thru the new crop, they select the batch that is to grow on from the batch that did not make the cut. the term is sembetsu and it means to separate. This term is translated into english as "cull" tho much is lost in this translation.

For example, If I divide my first showa babies at 3 days, those that didn't make the grade
were closer to the meaning of culls than my 6th and last sembetsu which means I did not have room to winter them and that was the reason they were separated out, not that they were culls. Webster defines culls as something rejected esp. as being inferior or worthless. This is not the case. I think we as americans tend to loose sight of this.

Dick

I don't really think they do any sembetsu at this time of year. They're still waiting until spring to make those decisions about who goes into the mud and who doesn't. That's basically what it boils down to. At this time, I would think they're simply separating out stuff they KNOW has no promise for the future (first sembetsu/cull of the "new" year)! Most breeders have what they consider an" export grade which is a general distinction of what they can sell in Japan vs what the rest of us consider worth purchasing. Within that general grading they then define AAA, AA or A grades for pricing. Most of these I would consider in the AA or A grade. I'm trying to be as realistic as the breeder is here, not what the average hobbyist sees. Sorry, I know it might sound harsh, but what do the breeders do with their first 3 culls? Remember those garbage cans set next to the culling stations?

It depends if you use cull as a noun or adjective as when used as adjective it means rejected as being surplus or inferior and that is classified as N American term in the Canadian Oxford dictionary .
