U of Minnesota soon to test for KHV

Our local University will soon be bringing online through their vet testing lab tests for KHV and bacterial sensitivity testing. Will be nice having a testing facility located locally. As soon as I have more details, I'll update this thread. Actually they are taking test samples now, but their online form hasn't be modified with clear details on the specific testing and how to submit samples. That will be forthcoming very soon.

The U is nationally known for their work on many animals including equine, but now are branching out into fishieries. The head of the dept happens to be Koi Kichi which only helps the cause.

Keep us posted on that!

I have shipped samples to U of Georgia. Only place I was aware of.
Now there's U of Minn.

Are there any others? Any on the west coast?

Who is this Koi Kichi guy? (or girl). Do they have connections to others such as AKCA?

Other places testing for KHV....

Of all fish pathologists I know of, the one I trust implicitly is Dr. Goodwin at UAPB. They do KHV testing, state of the art.

I thought they did such tests in California at UC Davis.

Any pathologist worth thier salt will tell you that KHV testing is not 100%, not even close. However, much better than nothing.

Still no test to detect latency beyond a certain point. So, a latent carrier can be tested again and again and come up negative until it begins to shed virus.

Funny you should mention UC Davis. My wife, Kari, attended a Koi Health Seminar there yesterday and they are gearing up again. They are planning on having a KHV testing program as well. This is great news for dealers on the West Coast. They are a mear 50 miles from us.

The U of MN (Nick PHelps) is consulting with Dr. Goodwin as he builds his testing program so once online and available, this should be a good reliable testing alternative..

Sounds to me like people in the field are finally getting the idea that this is serious business and that we need their help. Glad to see both U of Minn and UC Davis are on the fast track. Maybe more will join in as time goes on. The more there are the better for us and the hobby!
