Dead Fish

I am new to the koi hobby. Is it customary for a dealer to let you take home a sick fish. I was told the fish would get better then it died 4 days later.

No Luis,
A reputable dealer, would never sell you a sick fish intentionally, and would never let you take it home if they new it was sick.

Luis,
A reputable dealer would'nt do that. For newbies who don't know what they are looking at anything goes. Someone did that to me I bought a 29 inch shiro from a dealer and didn't know what swimbladder problem was. I later found out when Frank M. visited my place the the shiro has a condition called swimbladder problem. It was 3 years ago.

First off I feel your pain it sucks to loose one of your babies. At the same time why would you pay good money for a sick fish even if the dealer told you it would get better. If you were worried someone else would buy it I could see putting a deposit on it but beyond that I would say better safe than sorry

Did you take the fish home with the intention of curing it?

Luis, didnt you learn anything attending some of the NorCal meetings? Buying sick fish is a NO NO in this hobby!!! This is the kind of stuff that pisses me off, but to be honest with you it's time to man-up and call this a lesson learned.

depends on the conversation you had with the dealer. without being there, it's hard to determine what was said and who was right.

as others already pointed out, should never buy a sick fish even with intention to take it home for a treatment. too much risks. not worth the money or effort. I don't even take sick fish home for free let alone buying. whatever you spent on the dead fish, I guess you can think of it as a paid lesson.

Steve I disagree. A dealer should NEVER send home a sick with anone, no matter what the conversation was. That's just bad business.

I am wondering....why would you pay out good money for a sick fish? It's hard enough for a newbie to keep a healthy fish alive!

The last person who should want to purchase a sick/injured fish is a newbie. And the last person a good dealer should sell such a fish to is a newbie. Bad situation for purchaseer, dealer, and fish.

I think it is a very different situation if the purchaser is very experienced (therefore fully understands the situation) and the dealer knows that. Then the fish as good as possible chance of healing. So that could be a good ending for the purchaser, dealer, and fish.

Did you put the fish in with your own fish? If so, you need to find out what was wrong with the fish so you can treat them before they get sick.

Never, ever, buy a sick fish or fish that are in the same tank with sick fish.

If I were you, I'd be on the phone or at that dealer asking for my money back and telling him about his business practices.

noted on your believe.

btw, you're just assuming that good money was paid for the sick fish. another thing, if the buyer insist on taking the fish home to treat it himself or herself, you really think the dealer will twist his/her arms and said "no". like I said earlier, I was not there to know what was said so let's not debate further on what you believe vs what actual happened in this case.
