Mike,

your comments surely jolt my thinking, especially the second paragraph. I am wondering about the 2008 AJKS GC kohaku. maybe someone can post its detail history so we can understand better.

I don't think anyone who shows any kind of animal is in it to support the show. They all want to win. That's the competitive spirit amongst us humans.

Now, that being said, what about the people who simply have a fish brought to a show by a dealer/breeder? Or someone who buys a fish picked by someone else 'cuz they don't have "the eye"?This is where EGO AND BRAGGING RIGHTS shouldn't really fit together. That's all for ego. Bragging rights, to me, is when you have groomed a fish, in your own pond ( like Duke for example) and bring it out at it's best. And when you win, then you should have the right to brag. Otherwise, it's all about nothing more than winning a $6 bowling trophy, as Nancy once put it!

Anyway, that's my two cents worth on the subject. Back to your regularly scheduled programming.

Well, for me...

I'm not even close to showing but I know I will down the road, it's just the competitor in me. But for me it will definately be a fish I've raised myself, as a test to my skills at husbandry, selection.

As far as showing to support a club. Done it, will do it again. I compete with Belgian Malinois in French Ring Sport. (it's an agility, obedience, protection sport) I've entered my dog and myself in a trial when I know we are not ready (to even do well enough to pass the level, let alone win it) simply because the sport is young here in North America and anything I can do to support and help it grow is worthwhile to me.

YouTube - Saphir (little video I put up a while ago of my dog Saphir)

Anyway, until I'm ready I'll be the quiet guy in the back row at a show/seminar near you plotting my strategy for victory!!

Grant

For me personally..... if my fish win which means/confirm I own a good quality fish. It is as simple as that. Sometimes you are not quite sure until you show your fish to the judges.

I feel that showing koi is part of the hobby. When you first buy Koi you are just glad to see big colorful fish in your pond. The more you learn the more you know that they are just colorful fish. You start to learn about Sumi, Beni, and type of patterns and styles of the Koi. You also learn as you go along that your are looking for certain Koi that will develope in the later years. We all love are Koi and wish we could have the perfect Koi which we know their is no such thing.

We all strive to have the knowledge of people that we admire around us. We all know who they are because they are the ones that are at the Koi stores that know alot about Koi.
But must importantly you know you have learned alot about Koi when you can make a statement like this. I will bring out the fish when it is ready and I am sure to win. One thing I have learned and I have yet to show, no one is for sure to win.

I do not mean anything by this big KOI UNIT

any number of reasons I would suppose

I think for many, it's the fun of seeing how you compare in your raising skill with your piers. Some certainly are driven to win and that's all they shoot for. I've seen some after the realization that GC isn't happening, look into finding unique and differnt kawarigoi
that are not usually seen.Gaining some notiriety that way. I've also seem some who want the baby grand each year. I think that's the beauty of koi, there are so many possibilities.
It's been awhile since I've shown and i'm planning to show again this year with some beautifully bred domestics. I quess the point I want to be able to make is that a person can selectively choose high quality domestics and be compeitive against Japanese fish if they know what they're doing.

Joe when I made that statement I was talking out of my ass..I was drunk...When I get to level of some the Bay Area Hobbyist I will hope to make that statement come true.

By the way, you dont learn about koi going to dealers 1 or 2 years, try doing 10 years...

I just had to tease you about that comment. I hope you can laugh with me about it. The statement is some what true but you never know the true knowledge of the judges.

The second statement you are wrong you do learn going to dealers the first and second years. You learnfrom people like yourself and others that are there.

Know what you said about 10 years is were you learn knowledge of koi. I am not picking on you I like you. Please just smile. I realize I will never come close to your knowledge of expertise of raising Koi.

Big Joe out. what a great football game
