Question GR/metallic growth Q

I have a platinum Ogon. It was purchased summer of last year at 4" and is now only 6". Yes its thicker, healthy, proportionate etc. I have heard that Gin Rin & metallic types grow more slowly.

Is this true?

Im not getting rid of it because its small... just wondering. I have a yamabuki that I purchased a month after that has grown 4" in the same time frame.

Not true last years all Japan Gin Rin champion was 92cm and the tosai from it which I have are the fastest growing . Big fish produce more big young than small fish . A reputable dealer will give you an idea of how big a fish will grow when he sells it to you .
Of course you will have to pay more money for a quality fish .

Yeah I didnt pay much for it, and I obviously knew it was small when I got it. Im okay with not having a pond full of whale like beasts... I will post a photo at another time. It is very pretty - and for now worth what I invested

Three things that come to mind when discussing koi growth which are far more determinative than the variety of koi:

1. Genetics -- the potential the fish came with
2. Environment -- type and size of pond; stocking levels
3. Care and feeding -- pond maintenance; type/quality/frequency of feeding

The goal for every hobbiest should be to buy the best genetics we can and to then give them the best environment, care and feeding we can to see that our koi achieve their potential.

There was a time when that statement could be made- that ginrin resulted in smaller fish. But that was not due to the ginrin trait. That was due to the intense inbreeding to concentrate the effect. And later due to the fact that ginrin was becoming seen as a 'cheap' look and mostly restricted to production fish.
Ginrin is also a look that is best in/on young and small fish. It tends to become lost and less dramatic/more subtle in adult fish. So except for solid colored fish, ginrin is a trait best enjoyed in small fish and adult male fish. The beautiful female adult gosanke with still excellent ginrin that does not interfere with coloring shades, kiwa, sashi etc., is very rare. JR

Cute little thing.

Koda is a respected koi farm, but don't forget: Even the best ones produce the full range of quality.

And as a general rule, the sooner a breeder sells a koi, and the cheaper they sell it, the less upside they see for it.
