My pH is usually 9, alkalinity 80 and has been for 18 years. I have 0 hardness. I've never had problems with my fish.

I have a thread going about this right now. I thought I had a problem with my Kh dropping to 20 but turned out my test kit was bad. WHEW!

I think the main concern is that your pH is steady, not fluctuating all over the place.

The hardness is through the roof. I would be more concerned about that. Too bad we can't share. LOL

???? I believe the pH of chlorine bleach is less than 13. Lye is about 14(?). I've not known anyone to succesfully keep fish at a pH above 9.5 long term. Are you sure??

My tap water used to come out around 7. Last year, it turned to 8.5 in a sudden. I was doing 2 15% water changes weekly then. In 2 months, all my kohaku, showa and sanke were done. Even a benigoi has a good size white patch.

If these koi in the pond are of Japanese origin where 7.2 and 7.4 was the average they were born in to, I would be fearful of the loss of beni in their new digs at 9.....It is time to
begin a water softner regiment to get control again

Although I gave Nancy this info when I was in San Diego, she's forgotten and wants me to post it here.

Call your local Culligan Man ( Hey Culligan Man ). Add a water softner AND a de-alkalizer. The water softner is cheap compared to the de-Alkalizer). Then plum these into source water and tie them back together with a mixing valve (to include straight source water). You can then "dial in" you water parameters accordingly.

I fisrt saw this done by Chuck and Kimberli Downs back in the late 90s and its worked great for them over the years.
