What's wrong with males?

Hello everyone

I have a pond soon to be completed that is 6ft length, 5ft wide and 4ft depth. I plan to keep 2 koi's maybe at most 3. Due to my space constraints i thought maybe i would be better off with males.

Can someone teach me what are the advantages and disadvantages of a male? Should i just stick with females?

Thak you

b/c females will grow larger than males and finish developing a few yrs later compare to males thus extending their show career in the "jumbo size" heavyweight division.

btw; you can pretty much forget about keeping koi in a 900 gal pond.

Mingaun: As Moikoi pointed out, your pond is going to have less gallonage than is generally recommended for successful koikeeping. If the side walls slope toward the center, you will have far less gallonage and should consider some of the many varieties of goldfish. If you have 900 gallons, and are determined to try keeping koi, then I think you are correct to focus on males. Look for tosai males. Three would be your maximum.

I know in Japan there alot of hobbyist that go the Bonsai Koi route, because of the size of their ponds.

males will be great for your pond. Nothing wrong with them at all. It is one of the perfect things about the koi hobby- males are culled early and routinely as the breeders hold back the largest and best products for later on in the life of a spawn. So good ones can be had for very little money compared to females. Or at least they should, so don't pay too much for a tosai male fish. The dealer community knows that most newbies don't know a lot about the pricing difference between males and females so there has been a real push to price attractive males on par with females. Even though the wholesale price between females and males is vastly different ( the females getting a premium price).

The one thing about males that is a real plus- they tend to have nicer patterns. And ones that look great on their slimmer, smaller bodies. If I had unlimited funds/time and space, I would build a male pond also. JR

Very encourage thought JR, I salute your koi spirit and compromise, always think outside the window. I think this is where the hobby begins.

6' x 5' x 4'

Thats a weird size pond. Do you not have the space?

My pond is 5'X5' but is 10' deep.

Hey i wonder could you have an aquarium for koi in a hotel that is 5x5 but 30' deep, and stock it like it was a normal pond ? By could i don't mean should but would it be possible?

This guy is FOS, why bother giving rational answers...
If your pond is 5x5x10=250 so put 250 koi in it

cool pond

most people that have a 6x5' pond don't go 4' deep. they just have a little water feature.

Ya my pond is great though. I save alot of space. It makes cleaning my 60 koi fish waste up easy. Hooking up the bottum drain was hard. I had to use a latter.

And, you know those hotels with big sea aquariums. lets say some crazy vegas hotel wanted a koi aquarium to run up a few floor by the elivators or something. would koi even swim down 30 foot? you don't have to answer.
it wasn't a real question.
